Well we are in the final stretch with only ten days until we fly out into the Pacific! It has been a whirlwind around here lately. Dustin couldn't get his actual orders until we got medical clearance and jumped through all kinds of hoops, and we couldn't really get anything ready to go without them. Once they finally came in, we were able to schedule movers, book a hotel for when we get to our new state, and start looking for housing.
After hearing horror stories about hours spent in traffic commuting to base, we decided living on base would be our best option and have an application in with the housing office. If that doesn't pan out, however, we are considering living on the other side of Pearl Harbor and having Dustin kayak to work, because how cool would that be?! Plus as an added bonus, we'd be neighbors with his cousin, whose husband is also stationed on Oahu.
We had to say goodbye to our pets for the summer, as they are staying with family until the waiting period for their blood tests is over. It sure is quiet around here without them, not to mention how VERY inconvenient it is to have to clean up spilled food myself....
I am officially certified to teach in Hawaii, and I am working on my online application for jobs! The school system there has different hiring procedures than any I have seen before. Rather than posting individual job vacancies, they have applicants submit a general application and then they send them to interviews based on their needs and your qualifications. I have a good feeling I will get placed teaching Special Education, since the need is so high and I have that certification. It will be a wonderful new challenge and adventure in my professional life!
My return to work also means that James will be going to preschool after he turns two. It's a bittersweet transition, as I have SO enjoyed staying at home with him, but I really think he'll thrive in a classroom environment with friends his age to play with. I applied for him to go to a NAEYC accredited program, which I know firsthand has to be good!
I am anxious for my active little boy's
first airplane ride. This one will be about 11 hours in the air, split between two flights. I'm hoping he will sleep for a good portion (and plan on administering some Dramomine to that end), but I also have a bag full of new toys and activities to keep him occupied while he's awake. I'll update with which ones go over well!
As I write this, movers are diligently packing up everything it seems I just finished UNpacking. We have ten suitcases packed to check on the plane, and will be adding two more to that collection in Atlanta. That's in addition to our carry-on luggage, the car seat, and the stroller. That sounds like a lot, but it has to hold us for over a month until the rest of our belongings arrive!
We're getting more and more excited every day. I still can't quite believe it's really
happening. More to come when we get there!
