Being a military family, we are geared up for lots and lots of moving. We'll be able to give a list of preferred locations, but ultimately we will have little control in where we end up. Some people might think that this would be intimidating, even disheartening to be forced away from the people and places I know and love, but I find it exciting and look forward to the adventure!
The interesting part of it all is that we are likely to end up living in places that we would never have chosen to even visit, like good old Biloxi, MS. And as it turns out, our new city has more to offer than we would ever have guessed! In our few short months living here we have explored Beauvoir, (the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis), won a little money (and lost a little more) in a few of the casinos downtown, had old-fashioned cream soda at a drug store, walked along a pier out onto the ocean, and learned from the Visitor's Center about the diverse cultural background of the city. We still have plans to tour the lighthouse as well as take a ferry out to one of the islands off the coast and go on a nature tour. There are tons of great restaurants here, and the people are wonderful. And we never would have experienced any of it if it weren't for the Air Force, because I had never even heard of Biloxi or had any desire to visit Mississippi on my own!
In the spring, Dustin will be turning in our wishlist of preferred base locations. I've been trying to think of places I have some legitimate connection to. But the thought of going to live somewhere I've been before seems like such a waste! I want to see the world, and I have decided to think of every PCS as an extended vacation where I get to bring all my stuff with me. I am honestly excited to go ALMOST anywhere they could possibly send us, and I can't wait to see what hidden treasures the world has to offer.
