Well, it looks like our little family is headed to Hawaii! We couldn't believe our amazing good fortune when we were told, and now we are scrambling to get things ready for such a big move. The only problem is...there isn't much we can do yet, even though we're moving in two months! I am a bit of a control freak, and I like to plan things and be 100% prepared, so this is a somewhat frustrating experience for me. We can't hire movers, look for housing, or even make flight arrangements until we have hard copy orders, and who knows when those will actually come in.
There are a few things that I have been able to get started on, and I have been trying to tackle them with my full attention. The biggest thing is getting our pets ready. Because Hawaii is a rabies-free group of islands, they take extreme precautions to ensure that it stays that way. This means that any animals coming onto the islands have to be up to date on their rabies shots and pass a blood test confirming the presence of rabies antibodies. After the blood test results are received, there is a 120 waiting period before they can travel to the island, and then once they get there they will have to be in a quarantine facility for 5 days before we can take them home. Fortunately, we have very understanding family members who are willing to keep them until this waiting period is over and then drop them off at the airport to fly all by themselves to us. I will definitely be a very worried mama until I see them arrived safely!
We are also trying to decide what to do about the vehicle situation. The Air Force will pay for us to ship one vehicle. We can then either ship one of other vehicles and pay out of pocket, or we can sell both of them here and use the money to purchase a used car in Hawaii (which we would then sell there before returning to the mainland in a few years). Regardless, we need to get the one car that we are shipping to our port of call as soon as we can so that maybe it will arrive around the time that we do...but that's another thing we can't do until we have orders!
I have been able to start the process of transferring my teaching license to Hawaii, and am anxious to get that finished so I can start applying for teaching jobs. I have also started an application to enroll my little man in daycare. This is a bittersweet transition, because I have so thoroughly enjoyed staying at home with him, but I know that he will thrive in the classroom environment. Plus, I'm a bit anxious to pay off my student loans....
Oh, and one more thing I was able to do in preparation for moving...I packed up all of our sweaters! We won't need them where we're going!
