This time of year, as we all look forward to a fresh start and begin proclaiming the things about themselves they way to improve, I want to shake things up a little. I want to take a minute to appreciate myself, exactly as I am. Of course, no one is ever perfect and I intend to continue to grow as a person, but I don't want to CHANGE. So as we say goodbye to 2016 and prepare to ring in 2017, here are the kindest things I can think of to say about myself.
I am kind, generous, and empathetic. I go out of my way to make sure others are happy, and I strongly feel the plight of others to the point that I seek to improve their situations in whatever ways I can.
I am open, honest, and genuine. I do not play associate aggressive games with people and I wear my feelings on my sleeve. Some may see this as a weakness, but I have learned to accept it and even appreciate it as a part of who I am. It helps me have healthier relationships because everyone knows exactly what they're getting from me and what I'm looking for from them.
I love structure and organization. Clutter negatively affects my mood, as do unexpected changes of plans, but this means that I take great joy out of planning trips and attempting (that's a strong *attempting*) to maintain a clean home environment.
I am very physically affectionate. I give hugs, I hold hands, and when it comes to my child I give big sloppy wet kisses! No one I love can ever doubt that it is the case.
I am a great mother. I spend time with my son reading to him, taking him interesting places, building and making art with him, and snuggling in front of his favorite movie for the 500th time! I am loving, but firm and am teaching him to be a good person. My greatest wish for him is that he make the world a better place and draw happiness from doing so.
I love to read and to make and appreciate art, both visual and performance. I can't remember which side of my brain that means is stronger, but the point is that I know what I enjoy and I pursue it.
I try to keep an open mind and allow my opinions and beliefs to evolve as I learn more and gain additional perspectives in life.
I recognize when I need help and I am usually not hesitant to ask for it.
I am adventurous and love to try new things and see new places, but also love to return to the welcoming embrace of home and family.
I am friendly and outgoing, but also need and appreciate quiet time alone.
I am fiercely devoted to my family and friends.
I am determined to make things happen when I want them to and have done things that others would
never even consider attempting.
And lastly, I am fully aware of the areas in which I need growth and I work towards improving all throughout the year.
Please take some time to say kind things about yourself and love yourself as you are, and don't let others dictate whether who you are is acceptable to them. And DO NOT let anyone make you feel as though you are vain or selfish for thinking positively about yourself. Sadly, that has been a struggle of mine that I am only recently recognizing and working to let go of.
Happy New Year, everyone!
